Dr. Kim van Walsum, Ph.D., M.Ed. received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas and her Master’s in Counseling Psychology from McGill University.  She completed her doctoral residency in Behavioral Health at the University of Texas at Austin and was a post doctoral Fellow in the PTSD Unit of the Olin Teague Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple, Texas.  She has held an appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine, and has been a clinical supervisor and program director in child, adolescent and family mental health in New England.  She is on the Medical Psychology staff at the new Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH), caring for patients in the Orthopedics, Rheumatology and Juvenile Amputee clinics.  Kim has special research and clinical interests in integrative interventions (hypnosis, mindfulness based stress reduction, imagery, expressive and contemplative artmaking) that enhance post-traumatic growth, promote coping with pain, chronic illness or acute injury, and optimize quality of life for pediatric patients and their families. She was trained in MBSR by Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn, co-teaches an MBSR class at the ACH, and is a member of the Calgary Mindfulness Interest Group.
